NEW DELHI: It’s been a long 19 years since West Indies batting maestro Brian Lara achieved his monumental 400 not out against England at St John’s. Since that historic feat, no other batsman worldwide has breached the 400-run mark in Test cricket.
Lara’s masterclass sent the England bowling attack on a relentless chase as he hammered an unbeaten 400 off 582 deliveries, comprising 43 boundaries and 4 sixes, propelling West Indies to a mammoth 751/5d.
Despite his heroics, the match ended in a draw.
Amidst Sachin Tendulkar‘s recent record of 49 one-day international centuries being surpassed by the run-machine Virat Kohli, Lara feels that the young talent Shubman Gill has the potential to surpass his Test innings record score of 400 runs.
“Shubman Gill can break both my records. He (Gill) can do it (break my records),” Lara told Anandabazar Patrika.
“In Test cricket, he can surely go past 400. Cricket has changed a lot, especially batting. Batters play t20 leagues across the globe. IPL has changed everything. The scoring rate has gone up. So you will keep seeing big scores. Shubman will score big, mark my words,” Lara said.

“Gill is the most talented batter in this new generation. He will rule cricket in the coming years. I believe he will go on to break many big records,” he added.
Lara is also confident that Gill can break his first-class record of 501* runs, in an innings, as well. Playing for Warwickshire, Lara scored 501 not out against Durham in 1994, a record that is yet to be broken.

“If Gill plays County cricket then he can break my 501*,” the West Indies legend said.
Gill is part of the ODI and Test squad for the South Africa tour.
The tour, which opens on December 10 with a T20 in Durban and is set to run until January 7, includes three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests.
