NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched an initiative to increase the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which sell medicines at subsidised rates, from 10,000 to 25,000.
Modi interacted with the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra‘ beneficiaries via video conferencing.
The Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra is being undertaken across the country with an aim to attain saturation of flagship schemes of the government by ensuring that the benefits of these schemes reach all targeted beneficiaries in a time bound manner, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
During the event, Prime Minister Modi launched a programme to increase the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the country from 10,000 to 25,000. The prime minister also dedicated to the nation the landmark 10,000th Jan Aushadi Kendra at AIIMS, Deoghar in Jharkhand.
The Prime Minister also informed that he is closely monitoring the developments on Namo App and highlighted drone demonstrations, health check-up camps and inspection camps for sickle cell anaemia in tribal regions.
Apart from the program, a health camp was organised at AIIMS Deoghar as part of the Sankalp Yatra, where PMJAY cards were distributed, and many other health services provided. Hundreds of villagers have availed of these services.
Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya was present at AIIMS Deogarh to join the occasion of inauguration of the landmark 10,000th Jan Aushadhi Kendra.
Jan Aushadhi Kendras that sell generic drugs at affordable price to the public under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). A medicine under PMBJP is priced on the principle of a maximum of 50% of the average price of top three branded medicines.
Therefore, the cost of the Jan Aushadhi Medicines is cheaper by at least 50% and in some cases by 80% to 90% of the market price of branded medicines.
For example, the average price of Telmisartan 40 mg tablets sold under various brand names is Rs 72 per unit while the generic version costs around Rs 12 per unit.
In 2014-15, there were only 80 Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the country and their sales value stood at around Rs 7.29 crore. The number of such stores has gone up to nearly 10,000 in the last nine years and the annual sales have crossed Rs 1,000 crore mark.
