NEW DELHI: Citing recent cases of farmer leaders being “illegally” detained or arrested for criminal cases that had been imposed on them during the year-long farmers’ movement outside Delhi protesting against three contentious farm bills that were finally withdrawn by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Saturday announced that it will relaunch “a massive, peaceful mass struggle to confront any vengeful action against farmers by the Centre.”
SKM, the umbrella organisation of farmers that organised the farmers movement by encircling Delhi for over a year, till the contentious bills were withdrawn, highlighted at a press conference held at the Press Club of India on Saturday that, “SKM leader and general secretary of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) Yudhvir Singhhad been arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport at 2 am on November 29, 2023 on the ground that he is an accused in cases relating to Farmers Struggle in Delhi of 2020-21.He missed his flight to Columbia to attend anInternational Farmers Conference. Later in the day, due to the strong protest from the farmers movements, Delhi Police was forced to release him.”
“SKM will undertake a campaign among farmers and farm-workers on this very serious development and SKM delegations will meet District Collectors on December 11, 2023 and submit letter to the President of India, demanding no act of vengeance be allowed against the Farmers Movement, the farmer leaders said.
Questioning the Modi government on why it has not kept its promise of withdrawing the cases on farmers imposed during their struggle, SKM leaders also brought up the case of “Veerender Singh Hudda, BKU leader from Rohtak, Haryana who received notice from the Delhi Police on November 22, 2023, directing him to appear on a case relating to FIR No. 522/2020 dated 26.11.2020. Again, in the face of determined protest by farmers, Delhi Police was forced to publicly announce that the notice has been withdrawn.”
“On December 7, 2022, Arjun Baliyan of BKU was prevented at New Delhi Airport from travelling to Nepal. SKM leaders from Punjab, Satnam Singh Behru and Harinder Singh Lokowal are facing legal proceedings in the Patiala House Courts at Delhi relating to Delhi Farmers’ Struggle,” they pointed out at the press conference on Saturday.
SKM leaders Kuldeep Punia, P Krishnaprasad, Darshan Pal, Rakesh Tikait Prem Singh Gehlavat and Satyawan recalled, “the Union government, through a letter dated 9th December 2021, had categorically stated that the state governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have fully agreed to immediately withdraw all the cases related with the Farmers’ Struggle. They added, “the Union government and its agencies and administrations of UTs had also agreed to withdraw all cases related to Farmers’ struggle and the Union government would request all other state governments too to withdraw cases against the Farmers’ Struggle.”
