Four days before voting in Chhindwara Lok Sabha constituency, police walked into the residence of Congress stalwart and former chief minister Kamal Nath to “interrogate” his aide, R K Miglani, on Monday.
Nath was out campaigning when 40 to 50 policemen turned up at his house in Shikarpur, a village about 10km from Chhindwara district headquarters, at around 1pm.
Inspector Umesh Golhani of Shikarpur police station told reporters, “Some interrogation has been done. Investigation is on. We will share more details on the case later.”
Police refused to share details of the “case” but the action comes five days after BJP candidate Vivek Bunty Sahu filed a complaint, accusing Miglani and a local resident, Sachin Gupta, of posting a fake video on social media to defame him.
Miglani said he was not interrogated by police. “I have not been questioned. They have served a notice. I told them that I will reply after the election,” he said. Miglani is a long-time aide of Kamal Nath and was adviser to him when Nath was CM. Almost exactly five years ago, in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, the income-tax department had searched Miglani’s premises on April 7, 2019.
Nath, a nine-time MP from Chhindwara and father of Congress candidate Nakul Nath, accused the governing BJP of misusing the administration to harass Congress functionaries. He rushed back on hearing that police were in his home. “BJP is constantly pressuring Congress leaders. Those who have not succumbed to pressure are being subjected to raids and other action,” he tweeted on Monday.
